A Scholarship Started It All
Imagine being a kid who never even dreamed of college. That aspiration seemed too far out of my grasp, being the youngest child of a widowed mother who was struggling with health issues. And yet, the Good Lord had already laid His plans for me. I didn’t know it then, but I was destined for a four-year degree.
One day during high school as I worked an after-school job at a gas station, Coach Eddie McGirt pulled up. After my co-worker greatly exaggerated my skills on the West Charlotte High School football field, Coach McGirt offered me a scholarship to JCSU without ever seeing me play! From there, I joined the Dallas Cowboys after receiving my bachelor’s degree… and the rest is history!
I’ve fervently supported my alma mater throughout the decades and enjoy watching student athletes earn the Pettis Norman Award every year for their performance. I hope to attend the next Homecoming — let’s pray that the pandemic is conquered and life gets back to normal!
In the meantime, enjoy The Pettis Norman Story: A Journey through the Cotton Fields, to the Super Bowl, and into Servant Leadership and learn more about JCSU — its history and what makes is such a special place of higher learning. I hope you’ll order a copy on Amazon and leave me some feedback! Also, spread the word that the book is available — I appreciate your support!
